Ingredients:
- Beano’s Wasabi Sandwich Sauce
- 1 (14-ounce) package extra-firm tofu, drained
- 1 egg, beaten
- ⅓ cup all-purpose flour (about 1 1/2 oz.)
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
- Canola oil
- buns or rolls
- Panko breadcrumbs, for coating
Directions:
Prepare Tofu: Cut tofu slab in half horizontally to split. Cut each piece in half crosswise to make 2 – 4 slabs. Place tofu slabs in an even layer in an airtight container. Cover and freeze 12 hours. Transfer tofu to refrigerator, and let thaw 12 hours. Wrap tofu slabs in a clean kitchen towel, and press down to remove excess liquid.
Create Breading Stations: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, black pepper, salt, paprika, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper. Place the beaten egg in another shallow bowl, and the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl.
Bread the Tofu: Working with one tofu slab at a time, dredge tofu in flour mixture, dip in beaten egg, and then coat with panko breadcrumbs, gently pressing to adhere.
Fry the Tofu: Pour oil into a large, heavy skillet to a depth of 1/4 inch; heat oil over medium-high until it reaches 350°F or is gently rippling. Carefully add tofu slabs to hot oil; fry until crispy and golden brown, 5 to 7 minutes, flipping tofu halfway through cook time.
Drain and Season: Remove fried tofu from skillet, and place on a wire rack set inside a rimmed baking sheet. Immediately sprinkle tofu with salt to taste.
Assemble Sandwich: Serve tofu on toasted hamburger buns with a generous drizzle of Beano’s Wasabi Sandwich Sauce.
